Taylor Column Continued from pa4e 2 foe that he Is one of the mot effective politicians in Ameri can history. That means tint he I not going to roll over and play dead not for Bobby Ken nedy, Eugene McCarthy, Rich ard Nixon, or anybody else. One of two things will occur In Vietnam, I predict, if John son wants the nomination. He will ask for I Congres sional declaration of war and get it, or he will bring the war to a close. That would put him In an enviable position. We would be engaged In an ill-out fight as we were In 1944 when Franklin Roosevelt asked for a fourth term and got it. Ifthewarwere stopped before November, there would be no war Issue for the Republicans to campaign against, and Johnsonwouldhave gained the credit for stopping it. This much seems to be certalnt If Lyndon Johnson wants the Democratic nomina tion, he will get it. In fact, if he goes to the convention, he will have the necessary votes In his hip pocket to swing the nomination. The major newspapers re ported Sunday that party lead ers In all SO states favor John son by 65 per cent. Most of the rest of the convention sentiment and support is divided between Kennedy and McCarthy, with a 10 per cent segment not yet de cided. Primary voters do not nomi nate the presidential candl The nominations are conferred by political profes sionals, and they already have confided that they are over whelmingly for Johnson. Nor are nominations or elec tions won by college students. They look good on television cheering Bobby Kennedy on, but most of them are too young to vote. If Johnson wins the nomina tion - and we'll bet that he does he will very likely re main as president for four more years. That will depend, of course, on the Vietnam situation In November, plus domestic difficulties at home In civil fights, civil disorders, and the economic situation. With those things in satisfac tory condition, it would be en tirely posslbleforLyndonJohn son to retain the presidency by a landslide vote. In effect, the looseleaf sys tem permits a complete and accurate registry of all voters In the county, and it Is fault lessly accurate on day-to-day basLt. Under the old system, the books had to be "purged" every few years to remove the narres of people who had died, moved away, or otherwise be come Ineligible to vote. Registration books will open Saturday. Registrars will be at polling places In all 13 pre cincts from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Their presence at the polls will continue cn Saturday. April 6; 'aturday, April 13, and Sat urday, April 20, Saturday, April 27, wii: be challenge day. Voters may regijter during the week only by locatin6 the regis trar and akln,, to be registered. The Democratic and Repub lican primaries will be held Saturday, May 3. Only citi zens who have registered un der the new system will be ell .lble to vote. tied in with the county-wide registration is a special drive being conducted by Negro lead ers to have all eligible mem bers of their race re6lstered. The drive is being spear headed by the Rev. Thomas Walker and Jimmy Morrlsey. rhe Rev. Mr. Walker said less than half the eligible Neg roes were registered in the old registration books. Normally, only about half of those who were registered bothered to vote, he said. Poole said he believes 5,000 voters will be registered In the new registration, partly because many people formerly believed they were registered when ac taully they were not. With a complete new regis tration in the makind, every citizen in the county should now know that he is NOT registered and that If he wants to vote May 3, he must 6et his name on the books. Heavy registration Is expect ed in the county's new pre cinct -- Raeford No. 5 which is predominantly Negro. The precinct was set up several weeks ago by the board ot elec tions, which said It was nec essary because Raeford pre cincts 1 and 2 had too many registered voters for the mech anics of votino and counting the ballots to be speedy. Actually, both precincts had more than 1,000 registered vot ers. On election nights, the remaining ten precincts often would beat the two large urban precincts by sometimes four hours in reporting election re turns. Raeford No. 5 was created by taking away the northern por tions of Raeford 1 and 2, plus a small area of Raeford 4. Following is a complete list of registrars and where they may be found on the upcoming four Saturdays: Allendale, WJ. Roper, Com munity Building. Antioch, Mrs. Herbert Glllls, Community Building, Ashemont, Harry Thornberg, Community Building. Buchan, Mrs. Joe Odom, Odom's station. (Ap parently there have been no major changes In these attitude patterns between 1961 and 1966, for an independent survey of a smaller sample of 1966 grad uates showed about 58 per cent considering business.) The CPC data were found to be consistent with a conclu sion that a college graduate, Interested in a certain pro fession, would be at least equal ly agreeable to pursuing it in business as in government, uni versity or research institute, or other environment. In examining value priorities, it was established that here, too, the prime concern of grad uates is In the type of work in which they will be engaged and that they are relatively Indif ferent as to whether mis ca reer Is to be carried out in private business or elsewhere.
